Job Description


The ER Tech functions interdependently with the physician and nursing staff to provide high quality care for all ER patients.  The ER Tech is trained to perform simple tasks as directed by the physician and nursing staff and strives to maintain these competencies as directed by leadership.

  • Adheres to the policies and procedures of the hospital and assigned work area.
  • Demonstrates a working knowledge of computers, phones, and equipment used in departments to provide service to our customers.
  • Performs 12-lead EKG and rhythm strips in a careful and accurate manner according to the stated procedure.
  • Has basic knowledge of electrocardiography.
  • Has knowledge and ability to use the system for storing EKG’s.
  • Maintains and cleans EKG machine in a careful and accurate manner.  Performs minor troubleshooting of equipment as necessary.
  • Assisting nurses and physicians as needed (wound care, pelvic exam, orthopedic splints, etc.)
  • Obtains accurate information in the pre-admit process.
  • Registers patients in a prompt, efficient and courteous manner.  Greets all patients, identifies self and briefly explains sequence of procedure.
  • Prepares patient ID armband and places band on patient’s wrist during registration process.
  • Identifies patient appropriately at registration and when providing services of the multi-skilled position.
  • Maintains accurate manual logs as required by position.
  • Maintains work area in sanitary condition.
  • Monitors supply usage, orders supplies as necessary, and stocks patient rooms/work areas with supplies.
  •     Draws blood from patients and sends specimens to the laboratory for analysis                   according to established procedures.
  • Accurately labels all specimens, including date, initials and time.
  • Has a working knowledge of processes in all locations (Registration Clerk, ER Tech, and Unit Secretary).

Job Requirements


  • High school graduate or equivalent.  Subjects in chemistry and biology preferred.  Medical Technologist training preferred.
  • Successful completion and release from on-the-job phlebotomy, business office and basic EKG training courses.
  • Extended on-the-job training.
  • BLS – Heart Saver


  •  Verbal ability is required to communicate with patients and to understand instructions given by the physician or nurse.
  • Clerical ability is necessary to review orders and utilize data accurately for other purposes.
  • Ability to function in fast-paced environment, sometimes under adverse conditions. Understanding of medical terminology.
  • Finger dexterity is required to manipulate small objects such as test tubes and microscope slides.
  • Manual dexterity required to draw blood, perform data entry, place articles in cabinets, on shelves and trays.  A steady hand is a must.

  • Ability to perform repetitive functions while providing services for both well and ill patients.
