Job Description

SUMMARY: 

Works under the direction of the Occupational Therapist (OT) in providing care to the mentally and physically disabled. The Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA) assists patient participation in tasks to restore, reinforce, and enhance physical and mental performance and facilitates learning of skills essential for adaptation of an altered life style. The COTA is responsible for working with the OT and other health professionals in achieving goals related to meeting the individual's maximum independence in functional activities following a life-altering illness or disability.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • The occupational therapist assistant implements appropriate treatment techniques per the plan of care to maximize patient function. Treatment techniques include but are not limited to activities of daily living, exercises, ROM, coordination, cognitive/perceptual remediation, functional mobility training and use of orthopedic and prosthetic devices.
  • Adapts conventional therapy techniques to meet the needs of patient. Adaptations are based on the patients’ and families’ physical and cognitive capabilities, intelligence level, interests, and discharge plans.
  • Provides patient care in a safe and therapeutic environment by maintaining the privacy of the patients and families.
  • Provides education to the patients and family members from admission to discharge by providing individualized instructions to maximize function.
  • Demonstrates competency and knowledge of current standards of practice within the profession.
  • Engages in continuous quality improvement activities to evaluate compliance to standards, policies and procedures, and identifies strategies to improve patient care.

Job Requirements

EDUCATION/TRAINING/EXPERIENCE:

  • Equivalent or graduated from an accredited Occupational Therapy Assistant Program.
  • Licensed as an Occupational Therapy Assistant in the State of Louisiana.
  • CPR Certification required within 30 days of hire

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS:

  1. Medium to heavy work in lifting and supporting of patients
  2. Walking and standing for long periods of time.
  3. Agile enough to allow for easy movement about patients during treatment.
  4. May be exposed to blood and body fluids, contaminated open wounds, various flammable chemicals, adhesives and electrical equipment in providing patient care.
